How Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay Crushed 5,000m World Record



Gudaf Tsegay broke the ladies' 5,000m world record during Sunday's Jewel Association last in Oregon, USA.


The race was won by the 26-year-old in 14 minutes 00.21 seconds, five seconds faster than the previous record of 14 minutes 05.20 seconds, which was set in Paris earlier this summer by Kenyan star Faith Kipyegon.


Kipyegon's comrade, Beatrice Chebet, completed second in the race, with a period of 14 minutes 05.92 seconds - barely short of the past world record.


However, Tsegay, the defending 10,000-meter champion, would come out on top, setting a blistering pace all throughout and breaking the world record with three laps remaining.


She would hence pull away from her nearby chaser, Chebet, with Tsegay proceeding to beat her past private best in the race by 12 seconds.

Not long after her triumph, a different universe record was broken, with Armand Duplantis guaranteeing the men's post vault title, clearing 5.62m and 5.82m prior to increasing current standards one centimeter over his past best to 6.23m, and he committed no error moving past the imprint.


It was the 23-year-old's seventh world record in the last fourth years, with the Olympic hero outstandingly asserting his most memorable title at the track in Eugene back in July 2022.
