The Most Beautiful Countries on Earth, Ranked – According to Travellers

Choosing the most beautiful countries in the world sounds impossible until you listen to the travelers who’ve actually been there. This list of the most beautiful countries on Earth is built on real experiences, from people who have hiked the peaks, wandered the cities, and stood open-mouthed in front of those “is-this-even-real?” views.

From dramatic coastlines and glacier-carved valleys to colorful villages and ancient cities, these countries don’t just look good on Instagram they stay with you long after you’ve flown home. If you’re planning your next big trip or building your bucket list, these are the destinations travelers say you simply can’t miss.

New Zealand – The Undisputed Crown Jewel

New Zealand topped Rough Guides’ 2024 poll of the world’s most beautiful countries, with the respected travel publisher basing its results on readers’ votes. Respondents were asked to rate countries on multiple factors, including their landscapes, architecture, culture, and people, with readers praising Kiwiland’s “amazing scenery”, variety of activities, and the striking contrast of rugged, snow-capped mountains and pristine, golden beaches.

Two islands spanning roughly 990 miles (1,600 kilometers) deliver fiords, glowworm caves, and alpine lakes in day-trip reach, with road-trip South Island passes (Haast, Lindis) stitching glacier valleys to teal lakes while North Island adds volcanic parks and Maori culture. It’s no wonder moving to New Zealand is so popular, or why director Peter Jackson chose the country as the backdrop to his immensely successful Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies!

Greece – Ancient Beauty Meets Mediterranean Magic

Greece consistently ranks among the most beautiful countries according to various travel surveys, with the publication ranking Greece at the number one spot, followed by New Zealand and Italy. Greece’s rugged mountains, serene lakes, and winding rivers appeal to lovers of nature and peaceful retreats, with the Mediterranean climate including very little rain, up to 22°C (72°F) average temperatures, and abundant yearly sunshine.

Beaches are abundant in Greece, and feature sand in a wide range of colors: white, black, pink, or red, all surrounded by jewel blue Mediterranean waters and interesting mountains and rock formations. The sun’s golden hues, spreading upon the traditional white-blue buildings of Santorini, are truly something to behold, with the iconic blue domes, the ancient temples, Athens’ ruins, and Oia’s whitewashed facades being must-visit places in the country.

Italy – UNESCO’s Treasure Trove

From the Dolomites to the Amalfi Coast, Italy packs alpine drama, vine-striped hills, and art-drenched cities into a country roughly 736 miles (1,185 kilometers) long, leading the world with 58 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, underscoring a staggering concentration of beauty and history.

With more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country, this European country is packed with beautiful places, with every city seeming to have something unique and beautiful: the Coliseum and other archeological sites in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the cathedrals in cities such as Florence, the gondola-strewn canals of Venice.

Italy also boasts an overabundance of lovely landscapes, from the oceanside cliffs of the Amalfi coast to rolling green hills and snowy mountain peaks. Base trips around trains linking Venice–Florence–Rome, adding side-quests to the Cinque Terre or Puglia’s trulli towns.

Japan – Where Tradition Meets Natural Splendor

Japan ranked highly in Titan Travel’s 2024 Social Travel Index, thanks to the staggering 703,900 searches that have been made over the last three years an increase of 79.71 percent. Japan is teeming with natural beauty, from Mount Fuji dominating the Shizuoka skyline to Sakura’s beautiful sacred cherry blossom trees.

Autumn koyo season paints temple gardens rust-gold; spring brings cherry blossoms, combining Kyoto’s shrines, Nara’s deer parks, and the Japanese Alps, with Japan ranking among the WEF’s 2024 top three for travel readiness part of why trips flow so smoothly between cities and countryside. Japan has been ranked as the 2nd most beautiful country in the world by Titan Travel for 2023, from the tranquillity of the shrines in Tokyo to the mountain ranges in Kamikochi and the bamboo forests near Instagrammable Kyoto.

Switzerland – Alpine Perfection

Switzerland features mirror-lake villages and 13 UNESCO sites paired with effortless rail panoramas (think Glacier Express), with summer hikes delivering wildflower meadows at 6,500–8,200 feet (2,000–2,500 meters), while winter swaps boots for skis with powdery ridgelines over Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt. Like several other European countries, Switzerland includes a portion of the Alps and has a growing reputation as an excellent skiing and hiking destination.

WEF’s 2024 TTDI top 10 indicate nations built for smooth, scenic travel. The country consistently appears in multiple top rankings, making it one of the most reliable choices for travelers seeking pristine mountain landscapes and outdoor adventures.
